Antique Mother of Pearl Marquetry Italian Backgammon Board
This exceptional antique backgammon board is from Italy circa 1920s or possibly as early as 1910.
The previous owner moved to Italy from the states after she married a man that was part of an Italian monarch family. Eventually she returned to the states and brought a large collection of beautiful items she had acquired over the years. She left most of her personal collection to our client, her niece.
The board was hand crafted using natural fruit wood - walnut, rose, lemon and olive wood, with natural mother of pearl.
The beauty of the geometric marquetry and inlaid mother of pearl is even more stunning in person. The colors of the mother of pearl change depending on the angle of the sun. A beautiful gift someone or for your own home.
Measurements:
When closed: 19 x 9.5 x 2.75”
When open: 19.25 x 19 x 1.25”
Condition: Good - there are a few pieces of mother of pearl that are missing. The remaining seem to be intact and not at risk of going anywhere. There is a crack to the wood near one of the hinges that it located on the back and not noticeable and does not seem to affect the integrity of the board’s structure. All other features are normal with age, and add to it’s antique charm for an item so unique as this one.
